Youth Program 2008

Youthopia will be going off all weekend with a huge variety of acts, workshops and creative activities for young people. Whether you like to join in and get your hands dirty or would rather sit back and listen there is certainly something for everyone. Our performance program this year features the warm, emotive sounds of Australian born and internationally influenced Tonchi McIntosh, the return of gyp-rock geniuses Double Entrendre, laid back roots grooves from WA lads Sneaky Weasel Gang, an original blend of sounds from TinPan Orange Trio, the poetic pop of Simon Kelly Band, beautiful melodies from Freya Hanly & That Brutal Moon, multi-instrumentalist Saz Lockyer, blues influenced Matt Gresham, Fairbridge favourites The Wise Girls, plus Jonathan Brain and the Captains of Industry, Aiden Varro, Ben Zabbia, Chloe Hall and James Hazeldon, Lucy Wise and Jack Wilson, and Velveteen.

There are plenty of opportunities to join in with workshops featuring some of the finest talent around including vocal gymnastics with the indescribable Mal Webb, discover your songwriting ability with Junior or Freya Hanly, learn blues harp with Gary Collinson, try beat boxing with MC Jeazed, play percussion with the Sambanistas, study harmonica with Scott Wise, get cooking with the ever popular Go For 2 & 5 Youth Cooking Classes, be taught circus tricks with Nat Kell , get energetic with Theatresports or chill out with Yogateens.

In the craft tent there is even more to do. Join us on Thursday afternoon to decorate the space, make door curtains, wind chimes, costumes, junk mirrors, incense holders, design and paint glass festival lights or paint yourself in Body Art! Come for a workshop or just pop in when you feel inspired and make a paper plane, help with the music collage, create a mandala, design your own jewellery or anything as there is heaps to do!

Make sure you BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT so you can be part of the Youthopia blackboard concerts All you have to do is write your name on the board, and anything goes so just get up there! If you fancy being part of a big South African Township-style jam, be a part of the Kwela Street Band.

Beyond the tents of Youthopia there are even more great acts to choose from, so be sure to check out the other venues. See the separate youth program for suggestions on where to go and more details about what's on offer. Find it on the website or just pick it up when you get to the festival along with the main program book. Go and explore because you never know you could discover a new favourite!
