The festival may be over but the party goes on! Come and celebrate Fairbridge Festival of World and Folk Music 2012 with us, and in association with the 2012 WAMi Festival, at The Bakery, Northbridge on Wednesday 30th May. It’s a truly world class line-up with three top world and folk acts – the best that WA has to offer. The line-up (in reverse playing order) is:

Rachel and Henry Climb a Hill are Fremantle’s darlings of quirk-folk. Since winning the WAM World & Folk Song of the Year in 2010 their playful effervescence has endeared them to audiences across the state. The group is vibrant and unpredictable, spinning colourful stories of kites, pirates and lost loves.

Rhys Wood has been a familiar face around the Perth music scene for the last 20 years. He is currently putting the finishing touches to his 2nd album together with his band of friends, “The Self Righteous Brothers.” Four times a finalist in WAMI “Song of the Year,” Rhys won the World/Folk section in 2011 with his song “Another Sunday Morning.” A blend of Acoustic Pop/Folk/Classical influences. Rhys Wood’s music comes from a heartfelt perspective, with always something to say.

Ensemble Formidable is an electric manouche-swing farmyard mash-up of jazz-droid chickens getting down to Django. Sporting a fully-live, dashing 10-piece outfit complete with horns, strings, accordion, junk percussion & synth, this bizarre dancefloor doof-device has been assembled from pieces of gypsy-jazz, swing, dub, dubstep and classical, producing a sound reminiscent of Zappa grinding with a cocktail at a 1940′s Parisian rave.

Dear singers and festivalights,

Many thanks to all the people who wrote in and shared their fond memories of times at Fairbridge Festival. Kate Wilson, poet, and I thouroughly enjoyed the process of reading your stories and transforming them into poetry and song. We hope you will also enjoy hearing the fun little ditty we’ve come up with for the Festival Choir to sing at the big finale on Sunday night at this years Fairbridge Festival.

The Festival Choir is seeking participants, preferably with some choir experience, and men are always welcome. (We are singing a South African version of Forever Young and really need some strong Basses for that to sound great!)
Our special guest soloists include: Kavisha Mazzella, Carl Panuzzo, Ros Barnes and Bunbury poet, Kate Wilson.

This choral extravaganza is limited to only 80 people, as unfortunately, that is all the stage can hold. If you are interested, please send an email to Monica Lacey to register your interest asap.

As there isn’t much time at the festival to learn the songs, some pre festival rehearsals have been scheduled for the 2 evenings before the festival in Fremantle. You will also be sent sheet music and mp3’s of the pieces to familiarise yourself with, well before the festival weekend.

Fairbridge Festival Choir Director 2012

Are you a high school student? Or do you know a high school student?

Fairbridge Festival in conjunction with Mosarts has launched an exiting new competition: The Quest.

It’s a folk and world music original songwriting comp for all high school age West Australians.

There are two age categories, 12-15 and 16-18 and the winning entry in each category wins performance slots at Fairbridge Festival, 13-15th April and before the movie at Camelot Outdoor Cinema on Wednesday 11 April 2012 as part of the Fairbridge Festival Tasters series that takes place the second Wednesday of each month until the festival.

Heats and finals will take place at Camelot over the weekend of 24/25 March. Entry is free and close on Friday 2nd March so there’s two weeks to get your entry in.

Competition close Friday, 2 March 2012.

The position involves coordinating all aspects of receiving, recording and display of Artists Merchandise including CD’s, T-shirts etc.  The Coordinator works closely with the Festival Merchandise Coordinator to set up the Festival Shop on event.

As a Fairbridge Festival Operations Group member, this is a fabulous way of meeting the artists that come to our wonderful Festival.
