
| Australian folk/acoustic duo Steve and Ros Barnes combine powerhouse vocals with imaginative, distinctive songwriting and deft guitar accompaniment. They have recently completed a recording project in collbaoration with English acoustic duo Chris While and Julie Matthews. More on the CD... They have been performing as a duo and as part of the bands Toucan Tango, McCool and Dot Combo since 1986. They have performed at most of the major Australian folk-roots music festivals including the National Folk Festival, Port Fairy, Woodford/Maleny and WA’s Fairbridge (eight times). They have also made a number of festival and club appearances in England on three separate tours, in 199, 1997 and 2004. Their music has been described as “folk/ acoustic/ jazz with Irish and country leanings”. Steve Barnes plays guitar and mandolin-family instruments in the duo, and writes most of the material. He has been playing folk music semi-professionally since the early 1980s, in a range of genres including traditional Celtic, old-time American string band, European traditional music and contemporary folk/acoustic. He has been writing songs since 1988, and has won the national Declan Affley Songwriting Award at the Australian National Folk festival in 1992, the WA Folk Songwriting Award at the Toodyay Folk festival in 1991 and 1992, and has had a number of placings in the WA Music Industry songwriting awards. He is currently a member of the band The Last Five Coins, playing traditional European (mainly French) dance music. He is a former President of the WA Folk Federation, has been Artistic Director of the Fairbridge Festival (WA’s major folk/roots showcase event) since 1997, and is a presenter of folk/roots radio programme Acoustic Routes on community station RTR-FM in Perth. She is highly regarded nationally as a voice coach and workshop leader as well as an outstanding singer. She has a regular private practise in Fremantle as singing teacher and speech pathologist, and runs “Vox Properly” workshops in voice production at venues such as the National Voice Centre in Sydney and numerous festivals around the country.
